Bold sopranos

Thursday, 25 January 2018 05:59

There’s no shortage of scandals in the century-spanning history of Salome premieres, I mean let’s face it – even for the contemporary audience who’s been trained on thrillers and horrors will find it non-conventional that scantily-dressed singers would kiss decapitated heads on the opera stage.

Those who get into Salome’s role will have to perform the legendary Dance of the Seven Veils with a gem-crusted body – while singing of course. Anna Moffo was the first singer to strip down in front of cameras, then other great singers such as Montserrat Caballé, Birgit Nilson, Hildegard Behrens, Francesca Patané or Szilvia Sass would follow suit.

We’re excited to see how the demonic temptress will appear in the direction of Ferenc Anger, as Salome will be played by one of the best-known Hungarian sopranos, Andrea Rost. The famous singer will perform the challenging role for the first time in her career.
