Winter might still have us in its grip, but that hasn’t stopped Budapest Summer Festival from launching ticket sale for all performances in 2017! We’re talking about no less than Hungary’s most versatile festival hosting more international artists than ever this year delivering a high-quality cultural programme for all distinguished guests who come to town between June and the end of August. Just like in previous years, the choice will be yours as we present great productions in a wide array of genres featuring world stars from every continent performing on Hungary’s most impressive open air stage. Enjoy this unique chance, sit back and let us entertain you! This year’s programme for Margaret Island Open-air Stage features not only first class operas, marvellous concerts, stunning musicals and a unique ballet performance, but also a circus revue and various jazz, world music and cross-over concerts.
Szabad Tér Theatre has just kicked off ticket sale for all upcoming shows on Margaret Island. One of the highlights will be a spectacular performance of Gershwin’s most popular jazz opera Porgy and Bess staged as an opera concert featured by American singers. In addition, musical lovers will be excited to hear that last year’s most successful show, Evita, will be back and along with it the recent musical Doctor Zhivago based on Boris Pasternak’s novel starring Hungarian singer Zoltán Miller. Our programme also includes some of opera’s most beautiful arias that, following our popular series of presenting an Opera Gala with World Stars, will be sung by gorgeous American soprano Ailyn Pérez, Italian baritone Gabriele Viviani and Kosovo’s charming tenor Ramé Lahaj.
As one of this summer’s biggest attractions, we’ll be hosting the Béjart Ballet Lausanne Company on Margaret Island Open-air Stage. Honouring Maurice Béjart, who would have turned 90 years old this
year and who died 10 years ago, his amazingly successful company will be back in Budapest to delight us with a choreography featuring the best of Mozart and Queen. The company, founded exactly 30 years ago, will present its most spectacular production in decades to the Hungarian audience: Ballet for Life. Another highlight this summer will be Verdi’s masterpiece Il trovatore directed by László Vámos starring international top singers and Hungarian opera stars: We proudly present young Azerbaijani soprano Dinara Alieva as Leonora and famous Italian tenor Riccardo Massi as Manrico singing for the Hungarian audience for the first time, as well as mezzo-soprano Ildikó Komlósi as Azucena and baritone Mihály Kálmándy as Count di Luna.
The 2017 Budapest Summer Festival running under the slogan “Festival of Cultures and Continents” aims at turning the spotlight on the special role of our planet and art when it comes to bringing nations together: Theatre is the common ground that unites us, as we get to share some enriching moments together. On this note, we proudly present a high number of renowned artists on Margaret Island: Soul singer Y’akoto who is of German and Ghanaian origin, American Jazz-Swing band The Hot Sardines, Canadian circus troupe Cirque Éloize’s latest production Saloon and two-time Grammy-winning South African Soweto Gospiel Choir. In the Year of Reformation, the traditional opening concert of the National Philharmonic Orchestra featured by star guest Hilary Hahn will kick off this year’s season on June 9th. Marking the anniversary of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, Duna Art Ensemble, Hungarian State Folk Ensemble and Szabad Tér Theatre will be presenting the spectacular Folklore Dance Performance Monarchy. Following up on our much-loved symphony film music concert series some of the most splendid evergreens of film will be brought to you featuring Ildikó Keresztes, Lilla Polyák, Zsolt Homonnay, Gigi Radics and Attila Serbán. Celebrating August 20th, the Hungarian public holiday, we will be in for a night with the Virtuosos’ latest talents and star guests, while looking forward to a fantastic final concert powered by the Hungarian band Magashegyi Underground.
