The co-production of Open-air Theatre and Csokonai Theatre
The masterpiece of Slavic opera literature
Monumental story, music and vision on the main stage of Margaret Island!
At 8.30pm
The triumph and fall of Mussorgsky’s and Pushkin’s power-greedy hero. The sweeping, whirling story of the drama follows the life of the tsar elected out of free will, whose fate becomes his own conscience.
After its première in the Csokonai Theatre in Debrecen, the show has been adjusted to the grandeur of the Margaret Island Open-air Stage, where appears in its full pomp.
Mussorgsky’s historic piece has suffered several alterations by many composers but despite its problematic Boris Godunov is a true masterwork of opera literature. Through the tale of the throne usurper bloody, schizophrenic tsar and the impostor claimant to the throne, the performance puts the well-known “crime and punishment” Russian literature motif in the spotlight.
